Kaia was frustrated. All of the caves looked the same! The slight wolf didn't like being underground, but her curiosity had drawn her to the sandy tunnels she now roamed. Kaia had not found any other wolves, so far, but she yearned to learn if they were any different from her old pack. They would have to be, to live in such a different place!
Kaia squeezed into a narrow crevice, her thick fur giving way and pressing into her sleek body as she stepped through the close walls. The crack led to another tunnel that quickly widened into a circular room. Kaia's cream hide was coated thinly with red sand, so the wolf blended in with the cave. However, the clay and sand could not match Kaia's pearly lustre.
Kaia's small, intelligent head whipped around with a blur of speed. She could sense something. Not the equines on the other side of the wall; their sounds and smells were fainter, blocked by earth. This noise was closer – but whether horse or wolf, Kaia did not know.
